From our dharma teacher, Jill Kaplan from her talk on Monday the 27th: Planetary Crossroads

Here at this crossroad time, we are on the threshold in a time of passage. The crossroads signals a change of direction, new possibilities, new directions, but choices must be made, we cannot go one way without leaving behind another. We can’t go back, we can’t stand still, but which way? We are on the threshold.
Threshold is the doorway, a liminal space between worlds, between times, a place of careful discernment. Threshing is part of the harvesting, winnowing out the seed from the shaft, seeing what must go and what needs to stay. This is also a time of great learning, as we sort through the seeds; the virus is in many ways a generous teacher. It asks us to discern which parts of our old path were not serving us. What has been merely habit, outlived its usefulness, piled up in drawers or on shelves. It has given us the chance to slow down, to rest, to move slowly through our days. The word thresh is also related to the world thrash, and that might also reflect our position as we stand here at this crossroads; thrashing around with judgments and resentments and anger and trying, trying to find compassion and loving-kindness.

Liminal space, doorway to another time, and we are between times. Watch your mind: do you want to get over it, have it be over, get through it? Do you find yourself yearning for the past? Or holding on to the present because you are actually enjoying the quiet and space? This threshold time might be easy to dismiss or ignore, but it’s an opportunity for exploration, for just sitting with things as they are, just being. To sit still in this threshold, at this crossroad, will serve us well to choose the path to take, to take it consciously, to move along it towards re-incorporation with awareness.

      From dharma teacher, Jack Kornfield:

      Sunrise by Shannon Bergman
The feeling that we have so little control over how death could touch us in this instance — that’s what a lot of these current anxieties come down to, right? We’re worried about ourselves or the ones we love dying from Covid-19. You’re asking the question that goes to the hearts of the people who will be reading. Death is a great mystery. It’s wild that we have our personalities and bodies and full lives and families and then, poof, they’re gone. We look for a story and understanding in our lives, but first we’re faced with the mystery of death. What I know from 50 years of meditation and doing hospice work is that we are not just this body. You are made of spirit. And the spirit makes it so that even if people have died, we’re still profoundly connected to them in love. In that sense, they haven’t exactly died. They are in us, not only in our hearts but also somehow in our very being. Knowing this does not take the grief away, and it doesn’t take away the power of that grief to shake us to our roots, but it lets us know something bigger than all of that: Who I am is not just this body. We are consciousness.

From  our dharma brother, Dainuri Rott

Covid 19 and the lockdown has been the source of a profound pivot in "what do I want to do when I grow up."  Under the auspices of a non-profit organization called GoodlifeMobility.org, I have been working in the field of electric marine technology as applied to the disabilities world. The technology has been driven by my 16-year (and counting) quest to get a quadriplegic surfer, Jesse Billauer, back surfing again. Here is the story from our website:http://goodlifemobility.org/index.php/jesse-billauer/

Covid 19 has caused a major shift here at GoodLife Mobility (GLM)  headquartered in Redwood City California. During the lockdown, my partner, Merrill Snell, and I have started producing Face Shields and we have an immediate demand from local elder care and sub-acute care facilities.

Covid 19 unpreparedness and crisis management pivoted my thinking about using GLM’s marine technology for disaster mitigation including flooding, hurricane, and tsunami disaster mitigation for low lying areas worldwide.  GLMs electric marine technology, developed for the disability community, could be redeployed as low cost, GPS navigated smart-device controlled boats. Given the dimensions and ever-increasing speed of climate change, it’s hard to see a let up in natural disasters and crises in the 21st century.   Using the 1912 voyage of the Titanic as a metaphor, there seem to be plenty of icebergs ahead.

Spiritual practice has been a central focus of my life since my coming of age in the turbulent era of the 1960's.  This is not about "me", this is about dharma and the dream that GLM technology development and market research over the past 16 years could play a major role in saving lives and property in the face of rising and unstable waters.

“In Wildness is the Preservation of the World”
          by Eliot Porter

Each new year is a surprise to us.

We find that we had virtually forgotten the note of each bird, and when we hear it again it is remembered like a dream, reminding us of a previous state of existence.

How happens it that the associations it awakens are always pleasing, never saddening; reminiscenses of our sanest hours?

The voice of nature is always encouraging.

            Patience

            My practice is good
It's a little overwhelming to be on video calls
So much, and it's easier to feel overwhelmed these days
            Others are also overwhelmed

            Patience

We are all awakening together (bows to Jill)
            Work, yes, but also
            Sketch
            Write my stories
Work on the old quilt...stitch us together in my mind
            Run, create ....just emptiness

From "We Can All Do Better" by author and statesman, Bill Bradley

Wisdom acts for the long term.

              It recognizes our human frailties,
even as it celebrates our achievement.

It knows that good and evil
              live in the same heart.

It reminds us that we are
              our brother’s keepers…

              Wisdom tells us that
              love is our truest impulse,

              that love translated
              into policy is justice,

that we’re all on this planet together,
              connected by our common humanity
              and hope for the future.

Today what we need, above all,
              is that wisdom.
