From a student of Roshi's: Once in dokusan Mel made the comment to me: “The universe
will take care of you.” I remember thinking at the time “That sounds really
pretty silly.” Little did I know that those words and the sentiment behind them
would comfort me countless times. As my practice deepened and matured over the
decades, so too did my shared understanding of what Mel meant. Now I find
myself saying the same thing to others on occasion -- a sort of "dharma
transmission" from Mel.
